Dongfang zazhi. 東方雜誌. Shanghai, China, 1904–1948.
This magazine began as a monthly publication; from 1921 to 1944 it was a biweekly. Later it returned to a monthly schedule until it was discontinued in 1948. Articles are mainly on cultural topics, but political and scientific essays and fiction also appear. As an example, the 6/15/46 issue included articles on contemporary French politics, benefits of study abroad, archaeological research on ancient Chinese social systems, the origins of the Korean language, the names of the places to which Zheng He traveled, and a translation of a story by Michael Arlen entitled “Good Friends.” Each issue includes a table of contents. An index has been published.
